Here's a question: My 5 year old son is not a big breakfast eater. Lately all he wants is some dry cereal or a waffle, occasionally with some juice. He's a good eater for the rest of the day and on the days he's home, we usually have a healthy snack mid-morning. I try offering porridge, eggs, toast, fruit, even yogurt, but he's just not interested. Should I be worried?
The short answer is you probably do not need to be worried. It sounds like your son eats well throughout the day and on days he’s at school you likely pack nourishing food for him to eat at snacks and lunch break. It’s always worrisome for parents when our kids don’t eat the amount of food we think they should be eating. Keep in mind, though, that our job as parents is to provide healthy, tasty food and it’s up to our kids to decide how much they eat. Your son may not be eating much before he heads out the door to school but at least he has something in his stomach to start his day. Some people are big breakfast eaters; others eat more at lunch or dinner. Continue to offer him nourishing food for breakfast. Other items to try are muffins, fruit smoothie or grilled cheese sandwich. You could also offer some non-traditional breakfast food. For example, cheese and crackers, a peanut butter sandwich instead of peanut butter on toast, or dinner leftovers. Some non-traditional breakfasts my kids have started their day with include baked beans and toast; cold home-made mac’n’cheese with fruit; leftover baked chicken and juice; hardboiled eggs with dried apricots.
