Kids…In the Kitchen…Part 3

Taco night and another excellent meal prepared by Hanna!

I have involved Hanna in the kitchen quite frequently over the years and she is a great kitchen helper – able to help chop vegetables, mix together a sauce or salad dressing or even mix together some muffin batter.

The most amazing and surprising result of teaching her how to cook a whole meal and having her do just that has been the pride she has in her ability and the meal she has made. It really is quite beautiful to watch as a parent.

So taco night was an easier meal. Hanna was able to dice the onion, tomato and peppers, shred cheese and chop some lettuce on her own.

So all I had to teach her was how to cook ground meat.

How to Cook Ground Meat
  • Heat your pan on medium heat
  • Add 2 tsp vegetable oil

  • Add diced onions and cook stirring around the pan for 4-5 minutes until the onions start to become translucent.

  • Add ground meat. Using a spatula break apart the meat as it cooks. Always check the temperature of the meat. Ground beef should be cooked to a temperature of 71 C (160 F)

Safety Tips
  • Select a burner where the pan covers the whole burner.
  • While cooking make sure your pan is always covering the burner
  • Always how onto the handle of the pan before stirring the food
  • When putting food into a hot pan or pot don’t drop it in from high above the pan – this will cause the pan contents to splatter and could burn you.

How to clean up after handling raw meat:
  • Wash your hands with soap and warm water before handling food and after handling raw meat or poultry or their packaging.
  • Wash dishes, cutting boards and counters with hot soapy water and sanitize using a mild bleach solution (1 tsp bleach per 4 cups of water)
